Good Night | Feng Li
INTRODUCTION
In 2017, when Jiazazhi made photobook White Night for Feng Li for the first time, he brought plenty of photographs to the studio. We were immediately shocked by his color photos. As a result, the black-and-white photos were put aside at that time. But he told us that the black-and-white was the starting point of White Night. From then on, the sense of “white night” comes to be his muse. “This is the way of the world, and it is a state of uncertainty”, he says. From that moment, he always maintains an instinctive viewing and a direct way to shoot.
Despite the difference in color between White Night and Good Night, there is still Feng Li’s way of seeing this world. He defines these photos are monochromatic instead of black-and-white in the traditional sense. In his eyes, black is more than just black. To him, this book is a farewell, farewell to the good old times.
ABOUT ARTIST
Born in 1971 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province of China, FENG Li is a self-taught artist.
Feng's photos are all fortuitous encounters with the unlikely cast of reality that’s taken center stage in his native city of Chengdu. He has an eye beyond the norm and a vision that detects the very spectacle of the mundane everyday. To Feng Li, girls in mini skirts, old ladies in fake fur, misbehaving kids, wandering homeless and all these characters on the street are in their own way playing different roles in this great fiction of ordinary life. May he be photographing a sedative congress or moving freely through the weekend crowd, Feng Li has constantly nourished his single, unique and plethoric series 'White Night' since 2005.
Feng Li has been internationally recognized including receiving the Jimei x Arles Discovery Award at Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival in 2017, Best Photographer Prize at Jinan International Photo Biennale in 2012 and Grand Jury Prize at the 8th Lianzhou Lianzhou Photo Festival in 2012. He’s also participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions around the world since 2007 including most recently solo show ‘White Not’ at Galerie f16 (Paris, 2020), ‘Utopia’ at Buchkunst (Berlin, 2020), BredaPhoto Festival (Breda, 2020), ' A Fantastic Night at the Art Museum' at A4 Museum (Chengdu, 2020), Festival Les Rencontres de la Photographie (Arles, 2018), Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival (Xiamen, 2017), China Anren Biennale (Chengdu, 2017), 40 Years of Chinese Contemporary Photography at Three Shadows (Beijing, 2017).
